Common Sense

Not stopping at red lights seems to be the norm these days. Today's newspaper writes, "Religious bodies to be roped in for 'Stop at red lights' campaign". Have our society gone so wayward that people need to be taught common decency through religion?

Are we so above the law that we can do as we like? What are we teaching our children? It is not surprising that children are breaking school rules and being public nuisance when parents themselves see no reason to obey the law of the land.

When parents are so caught up in making money and being ahead, the normal thing to do is to teach their children to do the same. I remember, we used to lend our books to friends when they need to copy notes or homework assignments. Now I hear, children as young as 6 are being selfish in fear their friends will be ahead of them in class. Who teaches them such behaviours?

Come on people. Where is our common sense? Common sense that stops us from going through a red light because it might cause an accident. Common sense that tells us to leave a gap at a junction so that cars can turn in and out. Common sense that make us let the elderly go first in a line or give them our seat in a crowded bus. Common sense that tells us to help another in need. Common sense that create in us an unselfish way of living.

Is common sense really dead? I think not. I think there are still decent human beings out there that see the errors in behaviours I see and are trying to do better and teaching their children to be good citizens of the land.
